An essentially-complete version of the original game was released unofficially in 2014 as a "Tribute Edition". Fighting is Magic's core gameplay mechanics were carried over into Them's Fightin' Herds with major refinements, and its six characters are based in part on the movesets designed for the characters in this game.

That game was eventually released five years later as Them's Fightin' Herds. With assistance from My Little Pony character designer Lauren Faust, they created a new cast of character and setting and began development of a new game from scratch. Being of a fan-made nature, this game was neither licensed nor endorsed by Hasbro. It was under development by a team of nine volunteers who call themselves Mane6. On May 6, 2013, the developers received a cease and desist order from Hasbro and discontinued development of the game. My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic was an upcoming fan-made fighting game inspired by the animated television series My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. This was a fangame, and not authorized by the rightsholders.

Each character has three primary attack buttons along with a fourth "magic" button, allowing the character to perform special support actions. Capcom 2, it features a complex, combo-heavy gameplay style and over-the-top air combos. This 1-on-1 2D fighting game is based on the popular My Little Pony series and pits the main six protagonists against each other.
